Kawai BL71 Upright Grand Piano Review (WHITE)

Normally, we would compare Kawai BL71 to Yamaha U3H or U3M, where the price point is almost the same, and the height is also the same. However, most of the pianist or teacher will go for Kawai BL71 including me myself. The grandeur grand piano design, elegantly designed book rak and also very powerful sound ( i will have to admit only Yamaha UX are able to compete with BL71) are the reasons why people go for Kawai BL71, the most loved used piano in Malaysia market !
Kawai BL series is undoubtedly the most popular and highly demanded upright grand piano ever made which were released in the early 1980s in Japan. Other than BL71 , there were BL11, BL12, BL31, BL51, BL61, BL71 and the highest end BL82 in the list. The Kawai BL71 is 131cm tall with the rounded case design, grand style fallboard and the grandpiano like music rak. Its a larget cabinet pianos, so like the K48, KU5, US50, that has longer bass strings which give a richer overall tone, as well as bass notes that are very bold and flavourful.
This Kawai BL71 white is specially made (custom) by one of our customers and normally BL71 comes in Black or walnut or mahogany color. BL71 has got the normal edition and some times if you are lucky enough, you might be able to find BL71 special with special Louis renner hammer !

The piano action is very quick and responsive to the lightest touches. You can really feel how good a piano action is when you play some soft music, and because of the softest touch, some keys are not able to play properly during the energy transfer from the finger to the hammer striking the string, however this is not the case with Kawai BL71. This is because of the highly acclaimed Millennium Action I that uses some carbon in the key mechanics. Carbon are stronger and lighter compare to wood made action while also able to give a quicker response time from key touch. Therefore, energy transfers from your fingertips will be more concentrated and provide greater control.
The keys are also coated in Kawai’s NEOTEX material, which simulates the absorbent properties of Ivory. It is not really noticeable at first, but after half an hour of playing you really notice a subtle amount of control, in part because your fingers are not slipping from sweat.

3. Tonality and Voicing
Kawai BL71 provides a tone that is rich and warm with fantastic resonant bass notes. This is really where the extra string height comes into its own, giving a resonant and warm sound throughout the whole keyboard. The bass note is so strong that its able to reminiscent a grand piano.
As for the middle and high pitch zone, its crystal clear tone is not too bright which is quite pleasant and lacking unwanted harshness. This results in a piano that does not become straining to the ears over hours of practice and performance. Yamaha U3 series i wouldnt say its not good, but somehow it lack of flavor and its own characteristic, unlike the BL71, sorry if i sounded biased haha.
Please take note that not every KAWAI BL71 are equal in used piano market. It depends on how the seller or technician refurbished the piano. Our master technician taken good care of every single keys to make sure it always stay balance, aligned and even.
4. GOOD INVESTMENT
